The Last 37

Duolingo launched The Last 37, a campaign to spotlight how much of the Hawaiian language has already been lost and how easy it is to help keep it alive.
One dictionary. 37 words. A chance to rewrite the ending.

We didn’t stop at the pages.

We took those words to the streets of Honolulu painted onto sidewalks in high-traffic areas.

A technique that fades over time, just like the language itself.

Every word was a quiet reminder: “this is still here, but only if you choose to see it.”

Each sidewalk piece included a QR code linking directly to Duolingo’s Hawaiian course, turning everyday curiosity into cultural preservation.

The Shortest Dictionary

There are only 37 Hawaiian words still alive in everyday speech. Duolingo turned this number into a wake-up call.

The Last 37 is a limited-edition book that preserves the last active words of the Hawaiian language, each tied to local culture or pop references.

A QR on every dictionary led users to Duolingo’s Hawaiian course turning awareness into action.
